A Refreshing Love Story
Belleville:The Belleville Theatre Guild’s continues its 61st season with Gardner McKay’s Sea Marks.
Director Knowlton Hunter said that he saw the play many years ago in Peterborough and loved it. He and his wife Jennifer performed the play a few years ago in Bancroft as a fundraiser. “I am very excited about directing my first play for the Belleville Theatre Guild and bringing Sea Marks to life on a Belleville Stage”, says the director.
Sea Marks is a beautiful old-fashioned love tale. Set in the 1960s, the play is the story of two no-longer-so-young people who develop a loving pen-pal relationship. They then discover love in person is considerably more complex, full of bittersweet honesty.
Knowlton has chosen Clare Westheuser to work beside him as his Stage Manager and Pat Gray to be his Producer. Auditions were held in September; Ian Feltham and Heather Muir have been chosen to portray these wonderful characters.
Baby Boomers may remember the playwright, late Gardner McKay, as a good looking hero from the 1959-1962 TV series “Adventures in Paradise,” but he answered his true life calling as a world explorer. A result of his world exploration was the 1971 play Sea Marks.
This Irish play is full of sentiment, sorrow and laughter. When we meet Colm, and he nonchalantly places his arm in the punch bowl while meeting Timothea for the first time, we are foreshadowed with gentle humour that laces the script.
Auditions are lined up for the rest of the season; with the next set being on Sunday and Monday November 18th and 19th for Bedtime Stories by Norm Foster. Director Phil Bowerman is looking for 10 males and 6 females ages ranging from 20 to 60.
